How do I know if my printer power cord is broken?

If your printer won't turn on or the power light is blinking, it's possible that your power cord is broken, but it's also possible that your printer has another issue. To confirm that the problem is the printer power cord, follow these steps:
  1. Turn the printer off and then on again. If it starts, the printer may have been hibernating. Check your printer's power-saving settings to see if it's set to power down after a certain period of time. Sometimes printers don't wake up immediately after a power-saving hibernation.
  2. Confirm that the plug is securely connected to the surge protector and firmly seated in the back of the printer. Pets often get tangled in cords and pull them loose.
  3. If you use a surge protector, make sure it's on and working. A surge protector that receives a surge may not work again.
  4. If the power to the socket can be cut off by a wall switch, confirm that it hasn't been turned off.
If none of the above steps solve your problem, unplug your power cord from both ends. The prongs on the plugs could be bent or the cord could have been damaged by a pet. If the cord seems to be in good condition, it's possible that an electrical surge or dip damaged the printer power cord.

Surge protectors help protect your electronics from electrical damage, but those same surges can short out a surge protector. Most printer power cords have integrated surge protectors in addition to the master surge protector you plug your electronics into, so it's likely the printer will work with a new adapter.

If your printer power cord is broken, you can order a replacement from Laptops for Less and receive it in 1 to 3 business days.
