The Universal Printer Power Adapter Explained

Can I use a universal printer power adapter?

Some manufacturers sell universal printer power adapter, but Laptops for Less doesn't recommend using one with your printer.

Each printer has a different plug configuration and power requirements. For example, while one printer power adapter may work well with an HP, it may not properly power a Lexmark.

A universal printer power adapter will usually come with several tips. You then have to choose the tip that best fits your printer. If you choose the wrong tip, it may not attach to your printer or could damage the connector if you attempt to force it in.

A universal printer power adapter could also provide too much or too little power. Usually a printer won't draw more power than it needs, but an adapter that supplies too little power won't run your printer.

A printer power adapter specifically designed to power your printer is best way to ensure that your printer's power needs are fully met and the connection will be solid and safe. At Laptops for Less, our printer power adapters are competitively-priced with universal power adapters, so you may actually save money by buying a model-specific printer power adapter.

The exception to our adapter recommendation is a travel power adapter. In the unusual instance where you need to use a printer while in the air or a car, a travel adapter may be ideal for your short-term power needs. If you travel with your printer, you may want to consider buying a smaller travel printer that can temporarily run off battery power.
