How do I maximize power tool battery life?

How do I maximize power tool battery life?

Power tool battery life may be longer or shorter than your other electronic devices, depending on how frequently you use it. A power tool that gets daily use won't last as long as a tool that you use a few times a year. However, in either situation, there are steps you can take to maximize battery life.

Remember the Memory Effect

The memory effect only applies to NiCD or Ni-MH batteries. If a battery is recharged before it's fully discharged numerous times, it will develop a “memory” and no longer charge fully. If your battery is experiencing the memory effect, fully discharge and recharge it a few times to reset it. Li-ion batteries don't share this concern and can accept partial charges without issue.

Clean Power Tool Battery Contacts

Power tools get dirty easily. In addition to wiping down the case, you should also clean the battery contacts on both the battery and the tool with rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab.

Disconnect the Battery Before Storage

If the battery is designed to be removed, always disconnect it from the power tool and place it in the case before storage. Not only is this good for the battery, but it prevents damage to the tool if the battery leaks.

Always Use the Right Battery

Some batteries can be interchanged between tools by the same manufacturer, and some can't. Before using a battery that didn't come with the tool, confirm that it is compatible. Using a battery that isn't compatible could damage the tool or cause injury to you.

Use the Battery Frequently

If possible, use the battery every 2-3 weeks. Even if you're just storing it, run the tool for a few minutes every 2-3 weeks to keep it in good shape.

These simple tips will ensure that you get the most life out of your power tools and their batteries.
