Are power tool batteries interchangeable?

Unlike some Ni-MH, NiCd, or Li-ion batteries that can be used with products from several different manufacturers, you should always buy power tool batteries that were specifically designed for use with your brand and model of power tool. This is due to the battery shape and the voltage necessary for different tools.

Power Tool Battery Shapes

If you look at your cordless drill, electric screwdriver, or other power tool, you'll notice that the battery is a part of the handle. It's usually larger and bulkier than a typical electronics battery and designed to fit a specific slot on the tool. Even if a battery from a different tool looks similar, it may not seat properly in the tool. Attempting to force different power tool batteries into your tool could damage either the tool or the battery.

Voltages of Power Tool Batteries

Power tools are also designed to accept batteries of a specific chemistry and voltage. Even if you have several power tool batteries from the same tool manufacturer, they may not be interchangeable due to voltage or chemistry.

If you use a power tool battery with the wrong chemistry, at best it won't work. At worst, you could damage the tool. If you use the wrong voltage, it may also not work. It could also damage the tool or injure you.

When buying a replacement battery for your power tool, always confirm that it is the right style, has the proper chemistry, and has the appropriate voltage to ensure that your tool will continue to function properly and safely.
