What are the different types of portable DVD batteries?

Portable DVD players can be a lot of fun, but you need the battery power to keep them going when you're on the road. There are a few different types of portable DVD batteries, so let us help you learn more about them to make the right choice when you're purchasing new batteries.

Technology Levels of Portable DVD Player Batteries

Some DVD players simply use standard alkaline batteries, such as AA or AAA. These can be either rechargeable or non-rechargeable. If you have been using non-rechargeable portable DVD player batteries, you probably find the cost of replacing them adding up quickly. If you would like to use rechargeable batteries, check your DVD player's manual to make sure that it can handle the slightly lower voltage that rechargeable batteries deliver.

Nickel-based Batteries for Portable DVD Players

Battery technology types that are a bit more advanced, and longer-lasting in portable DVD players, than alkaline batteries are nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) and nickel cadmium (NiCd). The disadvantage of these nickel-based battery types is often called the "memory effect," which may be familiar to you from other electronic devices. When you recharge one of these batteries without fully discharging it first, it will "remember" this partial charge and will provide you with a shorter duration of power for your DVD device in future charges.

Lithium-based Batteries for Portable DVD Players

The newest type of batteries for portable DVD players is lithium-ion (Li-ion). Li-ion batteries are lighter and more powerful than older battery types, as well as rechargeable. In addition, Li-ion batteries do not suffer from the "memory effect." Though they are often more expensive than older battery types, Li-ion portable DVD batteries are generally more economical and a better overall choice in the long run.
