Are all MP3 player chargers from one manufacturer the same?

Manufacturers may change the type of charger used by their MP3 players when they release new models. The new MP3 player chargers will be compatible with the new model, but not with old models. You also won't be able to charge your new model with one of the older chargers.

Apple has changed its adapter for third and fourth generation iPods and most newer models, such as the Nano and Shuffle. First and second generation iPods use a firewire charger, while later models charge from the USB connector.

Most other manufacturers, including Dell, Samsung, Rio, Creative Labs, iRiver, and Archos have changed chargers while developing new, higher-powered models. Many MP3 players that play only audio now use flash memory instead of an internal hard drive, which has different power requirements.

If you have an older charger, compare the connector to the plug on your new MP3 player from the same manufacturer. If they match, you can try using it as a spare charger. If the connectors don't match, don't try to force them together. You could damage your new MP3 player, making it unable to connect to any charger.

If you're unsure if your old charger works with your new MP3 player, check the manufacturer's website. It will tell you what kind of connector your new MP3 player uses and its power requirements. You may also be able to find an old user manual online that will give you the specifications for the charger from the older model. Once you confirm whether they're the same or different, you'll know whether or not you can use your old charger with your new MP3 player, or replace a broken charger for an older model with the charger for a newer model.
