Is my MP3 FM transmitter a charger?

Some MP3 FM transmitters are also MP3 player chargers, but others are separate components that only perform one function: broadcasting your MP3s onto an FM station on your car stereo.

If the transmitter is both an FM transmitter and charger, you'll note that it's attached to an adapter that plugs into a car cigarette lighter. There will also be a cord that connects to your USB plug or headphone jack. The transmitter will then be able to download your songs while also charging your device.

Unfortunately, some transmitters with cigarette lighter adapters don't also charge the players. Instead they have a slot where you would normally insert the headphones and are able to access the music that way. The cigarette lighter adapter is used to power the transmitter, but not the MP3 player.

Look for a transmitter that specifically states it is a charger or that doesn't block the charger while downloading your music. Transmitters that use an audio cassette can often be used while the MP3 player is connected to the cigarette lighter power jack by a separate car charger.

If you want to listen to your MP3s in the car, then you need an FM transmitter, or you need to go to the expense of installing an MP3 player jack in your car. The transmitter is the cheaper way to go. You can find transmitters starting at $20 and going up from there. The higher the cost, the more likely it is to have an integrated charger and more controls.
