How do I make my MP3 battery last longer?

You can extend the life of your MP3 player by getting more time out of each battery charge and reducing the frequency of your charges.

To maximize your MP3 battery, follow these tips:

  1. Turn off the backlight. The backlight uses a lot of battery power. If you can see the names of the songs without the backlight, turn it off. You can also set it to a short duration so you can read the screen while you use the controls, but it will go dark shortly after you're done.
  2. Charge when the battery is nearly empty. Although Li-ion batteries don't suffer from the memory effect, each charge uses up a charge cycle, thereby shortening the battery's life. If you only charge the battery when it absolutely needs it, you'll get the most out of each charge and your MP3 battery will last longer.
  3. Use the lock feature. If your MP3 player has a "lock" or "hold" feature, switch it on when the player is not in use. The feature will prevent the device from accidentally turning on and running down the battery if it's jostled in your bag or pocket.
  4. Turn off automatic album art and other video. If your MP3 player has video capabilities that bring up the album art for each song, turn them off. Repeatedly pulling visual data off the hard drive or flash memory card puts more strain on the battery.
  5. Use the "shuffle" feature or listen to a whole album. Instead of manually switching between songs, set your MP3 player to shuffle songs or play an entire album. That way the MP3 player can load several songs at once instead of repeatedly going to the memory for each song you choose.
  6. Don't watch a lot of video on your device. If your device is video-enabled, save that feature for long trips. Video drains the battery faster than music.
