Can I change the type of battery in my iPod?

Although some MP3 players may use rechargeable AA batteries, Ni-MH, or Ni-Cd batteries, the iPod uses a lithium-ion battery to reduce the size and weight of the device. The internal components are configured to work with a lithium-ion battery.

Due to the differences between Ni-MH, Ni-Cd, and Li-ion batteries, these batteries are not interchangeable in most devices. In addition, the Li-ion battery is the most advanced of the low-cost rechargeable electronics batteries. It doesn't suffer from the memory effect associated with other battery types.

In addition to their higher weight, non-rechargeable AA batteries carry the risk of acid leaks and rechargeable AA batteries are not lithium-ion.

Finally, the iPod charging cable or computer cable is designed for use with an Li-ion battery. Changing the iPod's battery chemistry could make it impossible to connect the device to the computer or charge it with the included charging cable.

Although you can't change the iPod's battery chemistry, you can replace the iPod battery with an Li-ion battery designed specifically for use in the iPod. A lithium-ion iPod battery change should only be attempted if the original battery has died or fails to charge the iPod properly.

An iPod battery change is a simple process with a compatible battery and a replacement kit from Laptops for Less. Never buy an iPod battery that isn't designated as iPod compatible. You also shouldn't attempt to charge the iPod battery with a charger intended for Ni-MH or Ni-Cd batteries.
