Dell Has Issued a Voluntary Laptop Battery Recall

Dell Has Issued a Voluntary Laptop Battery Recall

In mid-2006, Dell announced that certain laptop battery models are at risk for overheating or have the potential to catch fire. Although very few batteries have caught fire, Dell will replace all affected batteries as a precaution. There is no charge for the service.

Although overheating is the primary issue, defective laptop batteries may not overheat before catching fire. Most laptops with defective batteries were plugged into the charger or a laptop dock at the time of the fire, but a fire can occur at any time.

Due to the risk, Dell recommends that you participate in the program even if you haven't had a problem with your battery. The program is free and you will not need to send Dell your laptop.

Dell desktop computers or other Dell devices are not included in the recall.

Find Out If Your Dell Battery Is Part of the RecallAll recalled Dell batteries were manufactured by Sony under the Dell label. The label will indicate that they were "Made in China," "Made in Japan," or "Battery Cell Made in China Assembled in Japan."

Only lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are included in the recall. Affected batteries can be found in Dell Latitude, Inspiron, XPS, and Precision Mobile laptops shipped between April 1, 2004 and July 18, 2006. Customers may have also received the batteries during laptop service calls.

Visit the Dell Battery Recall (http://www.dellbatteryprogram.com) website to find out if your laptop battery is included in the recall. You will find a list of recalled battery model numbers and pictures of recalled batteries. Enter your battery's ID number into the site to determine if it's been recalled and access the replacement order form.

Complete the replacement order form at the website, and then remove the battery from the laptop. You can run the laptop with AC power until the replacement battery arrives. The site also has a link where you can check on the status of your replacement in the U.S.
