Do I need more than one camcorder battery?
No, you don't absolutely need more than one camcorder battery, but most manufacturers recommend buying a spare so you don't run out of battery at an inopportune moment. If you didn't buy a second battery when you bought the camcorder, you can buy a backup battery anytime. Just make sure that the battery you choose is designed to work with your camcorder. Some camcorder batteries include special chips that communicate with the camcorder. If your camcorder has a branded chip and the battery doesn't list it as a feature, look for a different battery. In addition to buying a second battery, you can buy an external camcorder battery charger. Some camcorder chargers can charge two batteries at once, but many will only charge the battery while it's attached to the camcorder. An external charger that plugs into the wall will allow you to charge both batteries at once, which will cut your charging time in half. You can always use a camcorder with AC power if your battery runs out, but you'll be tethered to the wall and only able to shoot within a short range. A spare battery lets you get the most of your camcorder and doubles your total shooting time without requiring you to stop to charge the battery.Spare camcorder batteries can be very affordable, so there's no reason not to buy a spare. You may even want two spare batteries if you tend to do a lot of shooting.
