Which adapters do I need for my camcorder?

Camcorders generally come with at least two cables and adapters. The most common adapters are the camcorder AC power adapter and the TV connector cable. Other cables, like a USB or FireWire cable, are also becoming more common with camcorders and video cameras.

Your camcorder must have an AC power adapter. Without the adapter, you won't be able to run the camcorder unless the battery is charged. In many cases, a battery charger is attached to the adapter, so you may need the adapter to charge the battery. You can also buy a separate battery charger if you want to use more than one battery.

Most camcorders still come with an RCA or S-Video cable. This adapter will have one, three, or four plugs, depending on how the camera is designed to connect to your television. Some computers have compatible plugs on the back, but most do not. Refer to the user's manual for instructions on attaching the camcorder to your TV or VCR. Most modern televisions have multiple S-Video ports because DVD players and other accessories require these connectors.

As digital camcorders become more popular, more people want to connect their camcorders to their computers to download the video directly. Your camcorder may come with a USB cable or FireWire cable. FireWire is preferable, but not all PCs have these ports. The port may also be labeled the 1394 or DV port.

Finally, your camcorder may be packaged with a travel adapter. This is not a standard inclusion, so you may want to buy one if you tend to travel internationally with your camcorder.
