What are the different types of batteries for bar code scanners?

Bar code scanners are great tools that keep your business going, but you need the battery power to keep them performing at their best. There are a few different types of batteries for scanners, and learning more about them can help you to find the right battery for your needs when you need a replacement.

Battery Technology for Scanners

Take a look at the battery currently in your device to see if it is marked with its technology level. You can also read the scanner's user manual to see what kind of battery it takes. Some scanners require standard alkaline batteries, such as AA or D. If you have been using non-rechargeable alkaline batteries in your scanners, you have probably found yourself replacing them often and the cost adding up. Consider switching to rechargeable alkaline batteries. While these deliver about the same amount of power, you won't have to toss them in the trash every time your scanners drain them.

Nickel-based Batteries

More advanced than alkaline technology, nickel-based technology will allow your batteries to last longer. There are a couple common variations of the nickel-based technology: nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) and nickel cadmium (NiCd). While these are rechargeable, they do suffer from what is often called the "memory effect." When you recharge a nickel-based battery without fully discharging it, it will "remember" the partial charge and deliver only that much power to your device. In short, a partial charge will diminish the battery's power capacity.

Lithium-based Batteries

An even newer battery technology level is lithium. The most common type of lithium-based battery used in bar code scanners is lithium-ion (Li-ion). These batteries are rechargeable and last longer than older technology types. Another advantage of lithium-based batteries is that they do not suffer from the memory effect. Lithium-based batteries are generally more expensive, but the longer life they provide makes them a better deal in the long run.
