Can I use a universal laptop AC adapter with my computer?

At Laptops for Less, every adapter we sell is designed specifically to match your laptop's original power specifications and connectors. Although universal laptop AC adapters are available, we don't recommend them for several reasons.

First, universal laptop AC adapters don't support all laptops. Most come with a variety of plugs and a variable voltage setting. If your laptop's jack doesn't match any of the plugs, you'll either have to buy a new plug or return the adapter. If your laptop is not listed on the back of the universal AC adapter's package, it may not supply the correct voltage to your notebook. Incorrect voltage could cause permanent damage to your computer.

Second, a universal laptop AC adaptor may not charge your laptop's battery while the laptop is plugged in. If you have no other way to charge the battery, you won't be able to use the laptop without the adapter.

Third, a universal AC power adapter may not seat properly in your laptop even if you can find the correct plug tip. An incorrectly seated connector could become unplugged during use. Some also have unusually short cords, which could damage the adapter or the laptop if it is accidentally yanked out of the wall.

Every Laptops for Less laptop AC adapter is fully functional and will supply the correct voltage if you buy the model designed to work with your computer.

Several companies also sell universal plugs for laptops. These plugs are designed to work with the existing laptop AC adapter, but convert the plug into one compatible with an airplane power jack or car cigarette lighter. These adapters are suitable as short-term power supplies while in the air or on the road, but should not be used in place of the laptop AC adapter when regular power is available.
